APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

1. INTRO

Alkemis Paint is easy to apply and requires no special equipment or training. Its advantageous attributes and outstanding performance can be best accomplished using the following process.

USE ON: previously painted latex or acrylic surfaces, drywall, plaster, brick & masonry, concrete, concrete block, hempcrete, stucco, adobe/rammed earth, non-ferrous metal (aluminum, copper, brass, bronze, nickel, tin, titanium and zinc) and low-traffic wood trim & molding. NOT recommended on wood cabinetry/doors, wood paneling, oil-based, alkyd or glossy paints, varnish, floors, ferrous metal (steel and iron), plastic surfaces or MGO board.

PLEASE NOTE: Mineral paints appear darker when wet and will dry lighter.

APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

2. PREP

For maximum durability, 2 coats should be applied.

To ensure maximum vapor permeability, please use only Alkemis Interior Mineral Primer where specified, followed by Alkemis Interior Mineral Paint.

Surface must be clean, dry and free of dust and contaminants. Prior peeling paint should be removed and sanded smooth. New plaster or masonry should be cured at least 7 days.

Do not use oil-based primers or putties. Stains from water, smoke, ink, pencil, grease, etc. should be sealed with the primer.

APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

3. MIX

Stir all containers thoroughly, preferably with slow speed drill and paddle mixer.

Mix paint continuously throughout the application process, so pigments do not settle.

For large surfaces, boxing paint (combining paint into a larger container) helps prevent shade variations from bucket-to-bucket.

Please keep lid on unused paint, so it does not dry out.

APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

4. PAINTING

Paint can be applied as supplied. Alternatively, up to 10% water may be added to the first and second coat to make it easier to keep a wet edge so you do not get lap marks. Do not apply more than 10% water as it will impact the washability of the surface.

Add:

  • 3 oz. for 1 quart
  • 1.5 cups for 1 gallon
  • 5.5 cups for 3.5 gallon

APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

5. APPLICATION

Interior Mineral Paint may be applied by brush, roller or airless spray.

Brush: Use a nylon/polyester brush (2 - 2.5” angled brush recommended for cutting in)

Roller: Use a 3/8” nap synthetic roller (for drywall) or a 1/2” – 3/4” nap synthetic roller (for masonry).

Airless Spray: 2000 psi minimum, .025 in. minimum tip, must remove filters and pump manifold.

Work quickly as paint is fast-drying.

Cut-in with a nylon/polyester brush. Only cut-in what you can paint within an hour. Last pass should be from ceiling to floor to even out roller pattern. Back rolling recommended.

APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

6. TEXTURE/APPEARANCE

For a uniform matte mineral finish, roll on or spray two coats.

Back roll for most even appearance.

For a velvety / brushed suede texture, apply the second coat with a 5 – 7” wide block brush in an X pattern (similar to limewash).

APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

7. FIRST COAT & TOP COAT

First Coat: Apply first coat to cover surface with no runs and allow to dry at least 4 hours.

Topcoat: For best results apply second coat undiluted and allow to dry overnight.

There is no recoat window after the first coat has dried. Mineral paints build quickly so avoid build-ups of paint at cut-in junction or overlapping pattern from roller or spray. Final finish should be as even as possible for best results.

Please note: do not “overwork” the paint during application or touch-up. Mineral paints are approximately 40% higher in volume solids than latex/acrylic paint. Overworking or over-application can lead to a difference in layer build-up and texture, which can be noticeable in angled light. See technical data sheet for more details.

    Like a Warm Hug

I was excited to use such a sustainable, natural paint that has so many benefits to using! I will admit, I was nervous when I read the instructions. However, there is nothing to be nervous about. I added the suggested water to thin it out a bit and it applied beautifully. The color is warm and inviting (photo doesn't even do justice to how beautiful it is). I am so excited to paint my next room!

    Exceeded Expectations!

I have tried many natural paints and wow this stuff exceeded my expectations! Really easy to work with, required minimal stirring. I used a latex primer to go over some old painted beadboard. Stains kept bleeding through the allegedly stain blocking primer but they are no match for this mineral paint! 2 coats of this stuff over the primer looks amazing, you would never be able to tell the beadboard is over 100 years old. Thank you! Wish I had learned about this stuff earlier. Worth the price.

Obsessed with this color and this paint

I have been looking for a paint that can take my rough (but cool) painted over structolite from the 70s walls and make them look more like plaster and/or limewash without having to go through an annoying primer process ... and decided to test out Alkemis on a small study off my master bedroom. I fell in love with this color and had to do it.

Every wall I've painted in this house with latex paint has been a total pain... coverage isn't great, and getting into the nooks and crannies is annoying. I have a ton of beams and angles.

Working with the Alkemis paint was a total dream. I used a 1/2 inch nap roller, and it went on easily and quickly. My beams mean a lot of natural break points so worrying about not painting into a wet edge isn't a big deal. I'm excited to have found Alkemis and I talk about it all the time :)

    Beautiful paint!

We painted the entire house in Desert Milk Adobe (and fireplaces with Light Pillar) - it's a perfect shade of white. A bit creamy, and looks different in every light. It's so beautiful on our walls, and it compliments our saltillo tile floors nicely. Love that when we had the house painted we didn't have to sit in paint smell for hours.

    Perfect Color

Nymf is the perfect soft pink with a touch of earthiness, exactly what I was looking for. Additionally, I love the matte, ever so slightly textured finish.
