RISD’s Furniture Design department presents Grounding Space in WANTED at ICFF. Remixing stylistic traditions and historical ornament and embracing the fantastical, this exhibition explores dimensionality—in virtual and physical realms—with natural and synthetic materials and through both traditional and exploratory functional objects. As our experience of space becomes more expansive, we remain inextricably tethered to the Earth.

If you want your home to last for decades, it should also be kind to the environment—and to the well-being of those who live there. Fortunately, sustainability and durability often go hand in hand. For example, Alkemis paints are made with natural minerals and are nontoxic; they're also non-flammable.

Architectural paint is the greatest contributor of microplastics in the ocean with some 1.9 million tons of the substance meandering through our waterways annually, outweighing all other plastic waste streams. Alkemis is the world’s first wellness paint with an inimitable recipe consisting of a clear quartz base, artist-quality crystalline pigments, and earthen raw materials. In addition, the company boasts cradle-to-cradle certification.

Acrylic-Based Paint vs. Mineral Paint: Even when branded as having no- or low-volatile organic compounds (VOCs), acrylic-based paints can still contain toxic chemicals in their additives and solvents. For instance, Alkylphenol ethoxylates (APEs), used in acrylic paint to improve pigment dispersion, are endocrine disruptors. Moreover, paint contributes up to 58% of all microplastics in the ocean—more than plastic bags, bottles, and straws combined. Mineral paint is a far better option. It is visually stunning, does not offgas, and is naturally mold and mildew resistant. Alkemis paint and Keim’s Innostar line are good options.
